How Much Does Minecraft Cost in South Africa? Every Edition in Rand

Which Minecraft are you actually buying?

Minecraft is one game sold as two different programs, and the price depends on which one your platform runs. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock Edition runs on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. They cannot join each other’s servers without a translation layer, which is covered in our Java vs Bedrock guide.

The important bit for your wallet: on PC, one purchase gives you both. Since June 2022 Microsoft sells “Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC” as a single product. Buy it once under your Microsoft account and you can install either or both. On every other platform you are buying Bedrock only, and a purchase on one platform does not carry across to another — Minecraft on your Xbox does not give you Minecraft on your phone.

Prices in rand by platform

Three things stand out. Mobile is by far the cheapest way to own a full multiplayer copy of Minecraft, and the mobile version is the complete Bedrock game — the same as on Xbox, not a cut-down edition. Console prices sit in the middle and go on sale often enough that waiting a few weeks usually saves R100 or more. The PC price is the highest, but it is also the only purchase that includes Java Edition, and Java is the version you need for mods, most technical redstone and the majority of large community servers.

Deluxe and “collection” bundles

Every store also lists a Deluxe Collection or Starter Collection that bundles the game with Marketplace skins, texture packs and worlds, plus some Minecoins. These cost R150–R300 more than the base game. Unless you specifically want the bundled content, buy the standard edition: the game is identical and Marketplace content can be bought later if you decide you want it. The Minecoins included in bundles are usually worth less than the price difference.

Where to buy legitimately in South Africa

Every legitimate route ends at one of the platform owners. There is no authorised South African reseller of Minecraft keys.

• PC: minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store app in Windows. Both bill in rand with a South African card, and both attach the game to your Microsoft account.
• Xbox: the Microsoft Store on the console or the Xbox app.
• PlayStation: the PlayStation Store with a South African account.
• Switch: the Nintendo eShop. South African eShop accounts have worked since 2018.
• Android / iOS: Google Play or the App Store. Never install an APK from a website.

Paying without a credit card

This is the most common practical problem for younger players and for parents who do not want a card on a child’s account. The answer is gift cards, and they are widely available:

• Xbox / Microsoft gift cards are sold in rand at Takealot, Pick n Pay, Checkers, Game, Incredible Connection and most cellphone shops, and as digital codes from several South African online retailers. They redeem on account.microsoft.com and pay for Minecraft on PC and Xbox, Realms, Minecoins and Game Pass.
• PlayStation Store cards and Nintendo eShop cards in rand are sold by the same retailers.
• Google Play and App Store gift cards cover the mobile version. Google Play also accepts prepaid airtime billing with most South African networks.

Buy the card physically from a shop or from a retailer you already trust. Codes offered on social media at a discount are the single most common way people lose money on this game.

Game Pass: is it cheaper?

Xbox Game Pass includes Minecraft. On console the Bedrock version is in the standard tier; on PC, PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate include both Java and Bedrock through the Xbox app. If you or your household already subscribe, you own Minecraft for as long as the subscription runs and there is nothing to buy.

Whether it is cheaper depends on what else you play. A year of PC Game Pass costs more than the game outright, so if Minecraft is the only thing you would use it for, buy the game. If you would use Game Pass anyway, Minecraft is effectively free. One caveat: a Game Pass copy stops working when the subscription lapses, and your worlds stay on disk but you cannot open them until you subscribe again or buy the game.

Realms, Marketplace and other extras

None of these are required. Many South African players never buy any of them.

Realms

Realms is Mojang’s own private-server subscription: a small always-on world for you and your friends, paid monthly in rand. Java Realms supports up to ten simultaneous players; Bedrock “Realms Plus” supports ten and includes a rotating Marketplace catalogue, while the cheaper two-player Bedrock Realm suits a pair of friends. For South Africans the important caveat is that Realms servers are hosted in Mojang’s regions, and none of them are in Africa, so ping is typically 150–200 ms. Marketplace and Minecoins

Bedrock’s Marketplace sells skins, texture packs, maps and mini-games for Minecoins, which are bought in rand in packs. Marketplace content is genuinely optional; Bedrock has free skins and free texture packs, and Java has an enormous free modding and resource-pack ecosystem. If you do buy Minecoins, buy the pack that matches what you need — the larger packs are marginally cheaper per coin but the leftover coins are easy to forget about.

Character Creator and capes

Some cosmetic items cost Minecoins on Bedrock. On Java, capes are only obtainable through Mojang events and migrations and cannot be bought.

The legal free options

• Java demo. minecraft.net offers a free demo that gives you a time-limited world (100 in-game minutes, roughly five real days) with the full game mechanics. It is the honest way to test whether your PC can run the game before spending R500. See our PC and laptop guide for what to check.
• Bedrock trial. Android and Windows have a free trial of Bedrock with the same world-time limit.
• Minecraft Education. The classroom version has a free trial with limited logins and is fully licensed through Microsoft 365 Education for schools. Many South African schools already have the licence through their Microsoft agreement without knowing it.
• Minecraft Classic. The original 2009 version runs free in a browser at classic.minecraft.net. It is a museum piece rather than a way to play the modern game.

Scams aimed at South Africans

Because the PC price is a real amount of money here, a whole industry exists to sell you something cheaper that does not work. In rough order of how often we hear about them:

1. “Free download” websites and cracked launchers. These give you a Java client that runs offline or on “cracked” servers only. They cannot log into a Microsoft account, so they cannot join any server that verifies players — which is every large server — and the installers are a common malware vector on Windows. Some also quietly install miners.
2. Cheap accounts on Facebook Marketplace, WhatsApp groups and “key” sites. R80 for a “full account” is either a shared login the seller will keep using, an account bought with a stolen card that Microsoft will revoke, or simply nothing. There is no legitimate way to sell a Minecraft account below retail.
3. Discounted gift card codes. Codes sold below face value are usually already redeemed or fraudulent. Microsoft gift cards do not go on sale below face value.
4. Fake “Minecraft” apps on the stores. Look for the publisher: Mojang. Anything else is a clone or a skin app that wants a subscription.
5. “Free Minecoins” and “free Realms” generators. These exist only to harvest your Microsoft login.
