Coordinate Distance Calculator

Distance between two sets of coordinates, the direction to walk, and how long it takes on foot, by boat, horse or elytra.

Speeds are typical sustained values on flat ground or open water. Terrain, mobs and Nether tunnel-digging add real time; Nether times assume an existing tunnel.

How to use it

Enter the coordinates of where you are and where you want to be. The calculator gives the straight-line distance both flat and in 3D, the compass direction to head in, and how long the trip takes by every common method — including through the Nether, where every block covers eight in the Overworld. The direction uses Minecraft’s axes: north is −Z, south +Z, east +X, west −X, matching the “Facing” line on the F3 screen.

Travel speeds in Minecraft

MethodBlocks per secondNotes
Walking4.3Sneaking is 1.3; swimming on the surface about 2.2, underwater with Depth Strider III about 5.
Sprinting5.6Costs hunger. Swiftness II raises it to about 7.9.
Sprint-jumping≈ 7.1The fastest on foot; on ice with jumping much faster.
Minecart on powered rail8Capped; needs powered rails roughly every 26–38 blocks on flat track.
Boat on water≈ 8Slightly faster on Bedrock.
Horse4.7–14.2Bred for speed; a good horse is 10+. Cannot enter boats or the Nether via a lit portal without being led.
Boat on ice / packed ice≈ 40The classic Nether-tunnel floor.
Boat on blue ice≈ 72Fastest non-elytra method. Blue ice is crafted from packed ice or found in icebergs.
Elytra gliding≈ 30From height, without rockets. Loses altitude.
Elytra with firework rockets30–60+Sustained flight; the calculator uses 45 as a working average.

Why the Nether is eight times faster

Every horizontal block in the Nether corresponds to eight in the Overworld, so a 2,663-block Overworld trip is a 333-block walk in the Nether — or a few seconds in a boat on blue ice. Building a Nether tunnel between two portals at the exact scaled coordinates (use the portal calculator) is the standard way to link distant bases before you have elytra, and it stays useful afterwards because elytra flight costs rockets. The Nether guide covers building safe hub tunnels.

Reading direction

The direction shown is the compass bearing from A to B, with 0° north (−Z), 90° east (+X), 180° south (+Z) and 270° west (−X). To follow it in-game, press F3 and match the “Facing” value: Java shows the yaw as an angle where south is 0, west is 90, north is 180 (or −180) and east is −90. Or simply watch the ΔX and ΔZ signs and walk so that both close towards zero. Compasses point to spawn (or a lodestone), not to arbitrary coordinates, so the F3 screen or Bedrock’s coordinate display is the tool for this.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my coordinates in Minecraft?

Java: press F3 and read the XYZ line. Bedrock: turn on "Show Coordinates" in world settings (or use /gamerule showCoordinates true) and they appear top-left. X is east–west, Z is north–south, Y is height.

Which direction is north in Minecraft?

North is negative Z. South is positive Z, east is positive X, west is negative X. The F3 screen also shows "Facing" with the compass direction, and clouds always drift west.

How fast do you walk in Minecraft?

About 4.3 blocks per second walking, 5.6 sprinting, and roughly 7 sprint-jumping. A boat on water manages about 8, a boat on blue ice over 70, a good horse around 10–14, and elytra with rockets 30–60 depending on how aggressively you fly.

How far apart do two Overworld portals need to be?

At least 256 blocks apart for each to get its own Nether portal automatically, because the game searches 128 blocks around the scaled position. Closer than that, build the Nether portals manually at exact coordinates — the Nether portal calculator gives them.
