Minecraft Potion Brewing Guide: Every Potion, Ingredient and Recipe
How the brewing stand works, every base and effect potion with its ingredient, the modifiers, and the handful of potions that are actually worth brewing in survival.
The short answer
- The stand
- Blaze rod + 3 cobblestone. Fuel it with blaze powder. Fill three glass bottles with water.
- The base
- Nether wart into water bottles → Awkward Potion. Everything good starts here.
- The effect
- One ingredient into Awkward: sugar = Swiftness, magma cream = Fire Resistance, golden carrot = Night Vision, and so on — the full table is below.
- The modifiers
- Redstone = longer. Glowstone = stronger. Fermented spider eye = the opposite effect. Gunpowder = splash. Dragon’s breath = lingering.
- The five that matter
- Fire Resistance, Slow Falling, Night Vision, Strength, Regeneration. Brew those and you have covered 90% of survival.

The brewing stand
Brewing needs a trip to the Nether first: the stand is crafted from a blaze rod and three cobblestone, and it runs on blaze powder, so you need blazes from a fortress before any of this is possible. The Nether guide covers finding one. Once you have a handful of rods you are set for a long time — one powder fuels twenty operations, and one rod makes two powder.
The stand has three bottle slots at the bottom, one ingredient slot at the top and a fuel slot on the left. Every operation applies the top ingredient to all three bottles at once, taking twenty seconds, so always brew in threes. Fill glass bottles by right-clicking water (a cauldron or any water source), put three in, and add ingredients in order: base ingredient, then effect ingredient, then any modifiers.
Brewing stands generate in village churches (with a cleric villager) and in igloo basements, which is a shortcut if you have not found a fortress yet — but you still need blaze powder to fuel them.
Base potions
| Ingredient into water bottle | Result | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Nether wart | Awkward Potion | Base for every effect potion below. The only base you need. |
| Glowstone dust | Thick Potion | Nothing useful. |
| Redstone, sugar, or most other effect ingredients | Mundane Potion | Nothing useful — a sign you skipped the nether wart. |
| Fermented spider eye | Potion of Weakness | The one effect that comes straight from water. Needed to cure zombie villagers. |
Every effect potion and its ingredient
All of these are brewed by adding the ingredient to an Awkward Potion. Durations are for the basic version; the extended (redstone) and level II (glowstone) versions are in the last two columns where they exist.
| Potion | Ingredient | Effect | Base | Extended | Level II |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swiftness | Sugar | +20% speed per level | 3:00 | 8:00 | 1:30 |
| Leaping | Rabbit’s foot | Higher jumps | 3:00 | 8:00 | 1:30 |
| Strength | Blaze powder | +3 melee damage per level | 3:00 | 8:00 | 1:30 |
| Healing | Glistering melon slice | Instant 4 hearts (8 at II) | Instant | — | Instant |
| Regeneration | Ghast tear | Heals over time | 0:45 | 1:30 | 0:22 |
| Fire Resistance | Magma cream | Immune to fire and lava damage | 3:00 | 8:00 | — |
| Night Vision | Golden carrot | See in the dark and underwater | 3:00 | 8:00 | — |
| Water Breathing | Pufferfish | No drowning | 3:00 | 8:00 | — |
| Slow Falling | Phantom membrane | Fall slowly, no fall damage | 1:30 | 4:00 | — |
| Poison | Spider eye | Damage over time (not fatal) | 0:45 | 1:30 | 0:21 |
| Turtle Master | Turtle shell | Slowness IV + Resistance III | 0:20 | 0:40 | 0:20 |
| Wind Charged | Breeze rod | Wind burst when hit (1.21) | 3:00 | 8:00 | — |
| Weaving | Cobweb | Spawns cobwebs on death, move freely in them (1.21) | 3:00 | 8:00 | — |
| Oozing | Slime block | Spawns slimes on death (1.21) | 3:00 | 8:00 | — |
| Infested | Stone | Chance to spawn silverfish when hurt (1.21) | 3:00 | 8:00 | — |
The four 1.21 potions (Wind Charged, Weaving, Oozing, Infested) are the “ominous” effects from the trial chambers and are mostly useful as splash potions thrown at enemies or as tipped arrows.
Modifiers: longer, stronger, splash, lingering
- Redstone dust — extends duration, usually from 3:00 to 8:00. Cannot be combined with glowstone; adding one to a potion that has the other converts it.
- Glowstone dust — raises the level (II), with a shorter duration. Strength II is +6 damage; Swiftness II is +40% speed; Healing II is eight hearts. Fire Resistance, Night Vision, Water Breathing, Slow Falling and Invisibility have no level II.
- Gunpowder — turns the potion into a splash potion. Thrown, affects a radius of a few blocks, works on mobs and other players. A direct hit gives full duration; the edge of the cloud gives less. Applied last, after redstone or glowstone.
- Dragon’s breath — turns a splash potion into a lingering potion that leaves a cloud on the ground for thirty seconds. Collected from the Ender Dragon’s breath attack with an empty bottle; needed for tipped arrows.
The order is: base → effect → redstone or glowstone → gunpowder → dragon’s breath. You can stop at any point.
Corrupted potions (fermented spider eye)
A fermented spider eye (spider eye + sugar + brown mushroom) added to a finished potion flips it to a related negative effect. These are the ones that matter:
| Add fermented spider eye to | Get | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Night Vision | Invisibility | The only way to make it. Armour and held items stay visible. |
| Swiftness or Leaping | Slowness | Splash version is good in PvP and for slowing a charging mob. |
| Healing or Poison | Harming | Instant damage. Splash Harming heals undead mobs — it does not hurt them. |
| Water bottle (or any base) | Weakness | Needed with a golden apple to cure zombie villagers; see the villager guide. |
| Strength | Weakness | Same result, but wastes blaze powder — use a water bottle instead. |
Tipped arrows
Place a lingering potion in the centre of a crafting grid and surround it with eight arrows to get eight tipped arrows carrying that effect at one-eighth the duration. Because lingering potions need dragon’s breath, tipped arrows are an after-the-End item on Java. On Bedrock there is a second route: fill a cauldron with a potion (right-click it with the bottle) and dip arrows in it; each cauldron holds enough for a handful of arrows per level, and no dragon’s breath is needed. Arrows of Slowness, Harming and Weakness are the practical ones; Arrows of Healing are for supporting teammates or, thrown at a zombie horde, a mistake.
The potions actually worth brewing
You can make everything on this page, and most players make almost none of it. The realistic survival shortlist:
- Fire Resistance (extended). Eight minutes of walking through lava. Turns the Nether from dangerous to safe, and makes bed-mining for ancient debris survivable. Magma cream drops from magma cubes or crafts from slime ball + blaze powder.
- Slow Falling (extended). Four minutes of immunity to fall damage. The End fight, cliff building, elytra emergencies. Phantom membranes drop from phantoms, which spawn after three nights without sleeping.
- Night Vision (extended). Eight minutes of daylight underground and underwater. Caving, ocean monuments, deep-dark exploration. Golden carrots are eight gold nuggets around a carrot, or bought from farmers.
- Strength II. Plus six damage per hit for ninety seconds. Wither, dragon, raids. Blaze powder is the ingredient, so it is cheap once you farm blazes.
- Regeneration (extended). Ninety seconds of healing. Ghast tears are the annoying part — ghasts die over lava and the drop is lost. Shoot them over land.
- Water Breathing (extended) for ocean monuments, and Swiftness (extended) for anyone without a horse or elytra.
- Splash Weakness — one batch of three is a lifetime supply for curing villagers.
Healing potions, by contrast, are usually a waste: a golden apple or simply eating is cheaper and the glistering melon costs eight gold nuggets each. Invisibility is fun and near-useless in survival. Turtle Master is a niche tank tool. Leaping is replaced by a horse.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a brewing stand?
One blaze rod and three cobblestone (or blackstone, or cobbled deepslate) in a crafting table: the rod in the middle, the stone across the bottom row. The stand is then fuelled with blaze powder — one powder is enough for twenty brewing operations.
What is an Awkward Potion for?
It is the base for almost every useful potion. Brew nether wart into water bottles to get Awkward Potions, then add the effect ingredient. Nether wart grows on soul sand and is found in Nether fortresses and bastions.
What is the difference between redstone and glowstone in brewing?
Redstone dust extends a potion's duration (Swiftness 3:00 becomes 8:00). Glowstone dust raises its level (Swiftness I becomes Swiftness II, with a shorter duration). A potion can have one or the other, not both.
How do I make a splash potion?
Brew gunpowder into any finished potion. Splash potions are thrown and affect everything in a small radius, including you. Brewing dragon's breath into a splash potion makes a lingering potion that leaves a cloud.
How do I make tipped arrows?
Surround a lingering potion with eight arrows in a crafting table to get eight tipped arrows of that effect. On Bedrock you can also fill arrows by placing them in a cauldron of potion.
Which potions are worth brewing in survival?
Fire Resistance for the Nether, Slow Falling for the End and for building, Night Vision for caving and ocean monuments, Strength and Regeneration for boss fights, Water Breathing for monuments, and Swiftness for travel. Most others are situational.
Timing a brew?
Each brewing step takes 400 ticks. The tick converter turns any tick count into real seconds, and the Nether guide gets you the blaze rods to start.
