What Minecraft actually needs from a computer

Minecraft is unusual among popular games. Java Edition is mostly bound by a single fast CPU core: the main game thread does world simulation, and the renderer needs a fast core to feed the graphics chip. It also needs several gigabytes of memory and loads chunks from disk constantly, so an SSD removes the stutter that a hard drive causes. Bedrock Edition is lighter still and runs on phones.

What changed in 2026 is the graphics side. Java Edition is moving from OpenGL to Vulkan, and on 21 July 2026 Mojang published new system requirements built around that. Hardware below the new minimum still launches the game today, but Mojang says performance is no longer guaranteed there and that such machines “may struggle or fail to launch Java Edition in the future”. If you are buying now, buy for the new figures.

Before buying anything, install the Minecraft Launcher on whatever you already have and run the free demo with the settings from the FPS guide. If it plays well, you may not need to buy anything at all.

Mojang’s 2026 requirements, and what matters most

Things that do not matter for Minecraft: RGB lighting, CPU cores beyond six, the case, and “gaming” in the product name. Windows matters for a different reason: Windows 10 stopped receiving free security updates on 14 October 2025, so buy a machine that runs Windows 11 (on Intel, that means 8th-generation Core or newer).

Tier 1: the refurbished desktop

The best-value Minecraft machine in South Africa is still a refurbished business desktop. Companies retire Dell OptiPlex, HP EliteDesk and Lenovo ThinkCentre machines in bulk, and refurbishers sell them with warranties for a fraction of a new PC. When we checked on 20 October 2026, Takealot listed a refurbished Dell OptiPlex 5060 small-form-factor desktop with an 8th-generation Core i5, 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD at R5,499 with a 12-month warranty. What to look for:

• CPU: Intel Core i5-8500 or newer (8th generation onward). An i5-8400/8500/9500/10500, or an i7 from those generations, is ideal. The first digit after “i5-” is the generation.
• RAM: 16 GB. If a machine comes with 8 GB, price the upgrade before you buy: memory prices rose sharply in 2025–26, and a single 16 GB DDR4 stick was about R2,500 when we checked.
• SSD: 256 GB or larger. Refuse hard-drive-only machines.
• Form factor: a tower (“MT”) takes a normal graphics card; a small form factor (“SFF”) takes only low-profile cards; a “Micro” or “Tiny” takes none. A Micro model with an i5-8500T, 16 GB and 512 GB was R6,499 — a fine Bedrock or light-use machine, but it can never be given a graphics card.

The integrated graphics in these machines are the weak point for Java under Mojang’s 2026 requirements, so plan to add a card. A 6 GB GeForce RTX 3050 was R5,842 at PC International when we checked. That card matches Mojang’s recommended video memory, and most 6 GB RTX 3050 models draw all their power from the slot, which suits the modest power supplies in business desktops, but the version we found is full height, so it needs a tower model; an SFF needs a low-profile card, which the listing will say. Total for a desktop and card: roughly R11,000–R12,000, before a monitor.

Tier 2: a new mid-range build

A new machine built around current mid-range parts comfortably exceeds Mojang’s recommended spec and handles shaders and modpacks at 1080p. Prices from South African retailers on 20 October 2026:

Alternatives in the same build: an Intel Core i5-12400F was R3,949 at Dreamware, and a GeForce RTX 5060 8 GB was about R9,100–R9,300 at PC International and Takealot, which takes the subtotal past R20,000. The Radeon RX 6600, long the value pick, no longer appeared in stock at the retailers we checked. Buy the power supply from a known brand (550–650 W covers any of these cards) and do not economise there.

An integrated-graphics option is the Ryzen 5 8600G (R3,489 on Takealot), whose Radeon graphics are among the strongest built into a desktop chip. It needs an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory, though, and DDR5 is the memory whose price rose most in 2026, so price the whole platform before choosing it over a separate card.

Tier 3: shaders and big modpacks

Above about R20,000 you are paying for shaders at high resolution and frame rate, for very large modpacks, for streaming while you play, or for other games entirely. A faster graphics card is most of the difference — a Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB was R11,899 on Takealot when we checked — along with 32 GB of RAM for heavy modpacks. If Minecraft is the only reason, this tier is not necessary; if you are buying a general gaming PC anyway, Minecraft will simply benefit.

Laptops: what to look for

Laptops are where most bad Minecraft purchases happen, because the cheap end of the market is full of machines that look fine on paper and fall short of Mojang’s 2026 requirements. Rules:

• 16 GB of RAM. With integrated graphics Mojang’s minimum is 12 GB, and many budget laptops have their memory soldered so it can never be upgraded. Buy 16 GB from the start.
• The right CPU. A recent Ryzen 5 or Core i5 (or Core Ultra 5). Avoid Celeron, Pentium, Athlon, Core i3 with “N” in the number, and anything older than 2020.
• Integrated graphics that can cope. AMD’s Radeon 660M, 680M, 760M and 780M (in Ryzen 6000, 7035, 7040 and 8040-series chips such as the Ryzen 5 7535HS) are genuinely capable. Not every Ryzen 7000-numbered chip has them: the Ryzen 5 7530U and 7430U use older Radeon graphics, and many Intel Core i5 laptops have basic UHD graphics rather than Iris Xe. Check the graphics in the specification, not just the processor name.
• SSD, 512 GB ideally.
• A dedicated GPU is optional. An RTX 4050 or RTX 5050 laptop is for shaders and the recommended spec’s 6 GB of video memory; for vanilla and servers a good integrated chip is enough and runs cooler and quieter.
• Cooling. Thin laptops throttle after ten minutes. If possible, read reviews that measure sustained performance, not the first minute.

In rand, on 20 October 2026: an ASUS ExpertBook with a Ryzen 5 7535HS (Radeon 660M), 16 GB and a 512 GB SSD was R13,499 on Takealot, and RTX 4050 gaming laptops started at about R19,500 (an MSI Cyborg 15 at R19,499 on Takealot, an MSI Katana A15 at R19,999 at Incredible Connection). Under about R12,000, most new laptops fail at least one rule above. Refurbished business laptops are cheaper — a ThinkPad T14 with a 10th-generation i5 and 16 GB was R5,999 with a six-month warranty — and are good Bedrock machines, but their Intel integrated graphics are the weak point for Java under the 2026 requirements.

Macs, Chromebooks and tablets

• Apple Silicon Macs (M1 onward) run Java Edition natively. Bedrock is not available on macOS. Because Mojang now asks for 12 GB of memory with integrated graphics, a 16 GB Mac is the safe choice. Mojang lists older Intel Macs below the 2026 minimum, and Java may stop launching on them as it moves to Vulkan.
• Chromebooks run Bedrock on supported models through “Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for Chromebook” on Google Play, a separate purchase from the Android version. Java is possible via the Linux container on some models but is a hobby project, not a recommendation.
• iPads and Android tablets run Bedrock at full quality and are a legitimate way to play, especially with a Bluetooth controller. A tablet can join Java servers only if the server runs a crossplay bridge such as GeyserMC (see the crossplay guide).

Where to buy in South Africa

For new components and built systems, the specialist online retailers (Evetech, Wootware, Rebel Tech, Dreamware, PC International and similar) have the widest range and price competitively; Takealot and Incredible Connection are fine for laptops and refurbished machines and offer easy returns. Note that many Takealot listings come from marketplace sellers, and the struck-through “list” price beside an item is not a reliable guide to what it normally costs. For refurbished desktops and laptops, compare the warranty as well as the price: the listings we saw ranged from six to 24 months.

Prices are moving. Daily Maverick reported in March 2026 that, according to Evetech’s figures, DDR4 memory had risen 100–130% in price, DDR5 190–250% and SSDs 70–95% (source). Treat every figure on this page as a snapshot from 20 October 2026 and check the listing before you buy. For used graphics cards, the classifieds carry risk: buy in person, see it running in the seller’s machine, and avoid cards that were used for cryptocurrency mining unless the price reflects it.

Whatever you buy, budget for a cable to the router and, if load-shedding is still a factor where you live, a small UPS for the router and the fibre box (ONT). Both make more difference to how the game feels online than the last R2,000 of hardware.
